At Montalbo, we are committed to ensuring that children with SEN are able to participate fully and meaningfully in all aspects of school life, including lessons, enrichment opportunities, trips, clubs, residentials, performances, sporting activities and wider school events. We recognise that inclusion means more than simply providing access; it means identifying and removing barriers so that every child can experience belonging, participation and success.
We will achieve this by:
- Anticipating barriers to participation and making reasonable adjustments to activities, environments, communication and expectations where required.
- Knowing our children well, using individual needs, strengths, interests and preferred ways of learning to inform planning and provision.
- Providing adaptive teaching and personalised support, including appropriate scaffolding, visual supports, pre-teaching, additional processing time and targeted adult support.
- Working closely with children, families and external professionals to understand what enables each child to participate successfully.
- Ensuring that additional support is provided within activities wherever possible, rather than unnecessarily withdrawing children or creating separate experiences.
- Making appropriate adjustments to trips, visits, residentials and enrichment activities so that children with SEN can participate alongside their peers.
- Providing staff with the knowledge, training and resources needed to support children with a range of needs confidently and effectively.
- Considering sensory, emotional, communication, physical and organisational barriers when planning activities and providing appropriate adjustments.
- Supporting children to develop independence, confidence and self-advocacy, so that they increasingly understand and communicate the strategies and adjustments that help them participate.
- Regularly reviewing the effectiveness of adjustments and provision, using the child’s voice, family feedback and staff observations to ensure that barriers are identified and addressed promptly.
Every child will be supported to take part, contribute and belong, with appropriate adjustments made to ensure that SEN is not a barrier to experiencing the full range of opportunities available at Montalbo.
