Welcome to Year 1
Welcome to Year 1 – we have an exciting adventure ahead!
Outdoor learning is on a Tuesday afternoon.
PE is on a Wednesday and Friday afternoon.
English
In English we will be reading the book Jim and the Beanstalk. This is an alternative fairytale version of Jack and the Beanstalk. We will submerge ourselves into the story, looking at adjectives and nouns. We will also write a letter to the giant. In the second half term we will be reading Colin Thompson’s Castles, please come back later to find out more.
Read, Write Inc.
Phonics is taught daily following the, ‘Read, Write Inc’ programme. Children will be given reading books that follow the sounds taught in school. All children should read their books regularly at home to develop fluency. Children will read regularly in school too. Bookmarks with common exception words will be sent home and checked regularly.
Maths
During Autumn Term, in Mental Maths we are building up our knowledge of composition up to 5, number bonds to 5, counting forwards and backwards to 10 and ordering numbers to 10.
This term in Maths, Year 1 will be focusing on Place Value to 10.
Pupils will be learning to, count forwards and backwards up to 10. Recognise and write numbers to 10. Understand the value of each number. Compare numbers (more than, less than, equal to). Use objects and pictures to represent numbers
We’ll be using lots of practical activities, games and visual resources to help children.
Science
In the first half erm we are looking at Everyday Materials. Children will be learning to, identify and name a variety of everyday materials (e.g. wood, plastic, glass, metal, water, rock). Describe the simple physical properties of materials (e.g. hard, soft, rough, smooth, waterproof). Compare and group materials based on their properties. Explore how materials are used in everyday life and why certain materials are chosen for different purposes
We’ll be doing hands-on investigations to help pupils explore, observe and talk about the materials around them.
History
In History we will be looking at the Bowes Museum and identifying and discussing why it is a significant building in Barnard Castle. We are hoping that we will be able to go on a school visit to the museum to help us learn about how it has changed from past photos.
Geography
In Geography we will be looking a what our school and its surrounding areas are like. As part of this we will look at how our school is made up, the different rooms in our school and what they look like on a map. We will then look at aerial photographs of our school, identifying where the key places are and also how school has changed over the years.
RE
In RE we will look at the Christian festival of Harvest, identifying what Harvest is and why Christians celebrate it. Hopefully we will also get the chance to visit St Mary’s church to take part in our own Harvest Festival. In the second half term, we will consider the different gifts that are given by Christians at Christmas and why these gifts are given.
Music
We are following the Oxford Owl scheme of music. This term we are exploring our singing and talking voices. Children will, explore the difference between speaking and singing. Learn to use their singing voice confidently and tunefully. Sing a variety of simple songs and rhymes. Begin to develop a sense of pitch, rhythm and pulse. Perform songs as a group and listen carefully to others
We’ll be using fun warm-ups, musical games and actions to help make singing enjoyable and engaging for everyone.
Computing
In computing we follow the scheme Teach Computing. Autumn term we are learning about Technology Around Us. Children will learn what technology is and identify examples in the classroom and at home. Understand how we use technology to help us in everyday life. Begin to develop basic computer skills, such as using a mouse or trackpad and keyboard. Learn how to use technology safely and responsibly.
This unit helps pupils recognise that technology is all around them and encourages them to think about how it can be used in a positive and safe way.
Art
In art we will begin with a focus on drawing skills. Children will, explore different drawing tools and techniques. Practise mark-making, line, shape, and texture. Look at the work of artists who use drawing in creative ways. Build confidence in expressing their ideas visually.
This is a fantastic opportunity for pupils to develop observation and creativity through fun, hands-on art activities.
