Welcome to Reception
This term we have continued with our topic of ‘Growth’, by plating our own broad beans in the polytunnel. We have learned about what plants need to grow and are looking forward to seeing them grow. We have been visiting the polytunnel each day, to water them and monitor their growth and are excited to see them grow taller. We also have our own caterpillars in class, after learning about the life cycle of a butterfly. We can’t believe how big the caterpillars have grown recently and we are eagerly awaiting their transformation into butterflies. We will then be releasing them as a class, when they are big enough. As always we have been utilising our outdoor space, even though we have still had plenty of wet weather! We have been stretching our imaginations in our outside farm area and home corner and have demonstrated great team work skills. We have also introduced our ‘Traditional Tales’ topic, starting with ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’, before we share some more classic stories, such as: ‘The Gingerbread Man’ and ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. We will be tasting porridge, making our own gingerbread men and might even have our own picnic.
We have been reading lots of books, as always and have enjoyed sharing topics related to our topics, such as ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’, ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and ‘The Crunching Munching Caterpillar’. We have been developing our oracy skills by re-telling our stories, using story maps and sequencing activities to help us. We have impressed the adults with our confidence and varied tone of voice when speaking. We have also been doing a lot of writing, focusing on our independent skills and applying new sounds we have learned to our writing.
In Maths, we have started our topic ’20 and beyond’. We have been counting on from 10, learning the number patterns and looking carefully at the number of tens and ones in each number. We will also be introducing different concepts such as addition and subtraction and focus on our precise counting using 1:1 correspondence. The children are very confident using the practical resources available to help support their learning.
As the term continues, we will begin our topic of ‘What a Wonderful World’, where we learn about different countries and the animals that live there. We will get to explore habitats and will have the opportunity to visit a farm for the day. It is always a lovely trip!
