People Who Help Us
This half term our topic is ‘People Who Help Us’. We have learned about the special work that Doctors, Nurses, Vets, Firefighters and Police Officers do and thought about how grateful we are to those people. We have enjoyed turning our hand to the different professions in our role play area, have made our own x-ray pictures, built our own emergency vehicles and becoming detectives to solve some classroom crimes, using our problem-solving skills. One important person we have also spent a lot of time on is ourselves. We have thought about why we are special and how we all have different strengths. We have been great at celebrating ourselves!
Literacy
We have enjoyed reading about lots of brave people and the challenges they face in their job. We’ve had a lot of fun creating our own story maps, wanted posters, letters, stories and have even started learning our capital letters. Some of the fantastic stories we’ve been reading are:
Maths
We have been doing lots of careful counting in class. We have been exploring our number bonds up to 10 and have been comparing and combining amounts. We have particularly enjoyed using part-whole models to problem solve and have even recorded out work as number sentences.
Winter
We have been learning about winter this half term and have had the perfect winter weather to match. We have developed our team work skills, helping one another to build a snowman and not to forget our time sledging. We had to work together to climb the hill with the sledge and were so patient when waiting for our turn. We’ve also done a lot of investigating and have persevered to free our animals from the ice. It has taken a lot of time and determination but we enjoyed the feeling of accomplishment when they were freed. We even found a real frozen leek in our mud kitchen!
Chinese New Year
This half term we are learning about and celebrating Chinese New Year. We have enjoyed reading about the Great Race and re-telling the story. However, we weren’t too keen on the sneaky rat and snake! We have practiced our Chinese number formation, made our own lanterns and decorations, created our own dragons and have loved learning about a different tradition.
Valentine’s Day
We are learning all about Valentine’s Day and how it began. We are making cards for the ones we love, exploring the history of Valentine’s day and are sharing our love at school in the acts of kindness.
Next half term we begin our ‘Fairytales’ topic. Please come back soon to see our Spring 2 update.
