This half term we entered the magical world of Fairy Tales. We have enjoyed reading some classic tales, including: ‘The Gingerbread Man’, ‘The Three Little Pigs’, ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’, ‘Robin Hood’ and ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’.
We have also been learning about ‘Amazing Eggs’ and have enjoyed reading ‘Bumpus Jumpus Dinosaurumpus’, ‘The Egg’ and ‘The Frog who couldn’t Ribbit’ to name but a few.
We have enjoyed writing in lots of different ways and in Spring 1 we have created our own wanted posters, written letters to the Three Bears, sent messages of help to Robin Hood, created our own maps and keys and have re-told our stories. We have also developed our imagination in a range of ways using our ever-changing imaginations. We have been chefs, police officers, bird watchers, bakers and gardeners.
In Spring 2, we have created our own menus, written postcards, designed our own dinosaurs, written our own book reviews and have learned all about capital letters.
In Maths, we have been learning how to add by combining groups. We have used lots of different resources, including ten frames and part-whole models to help us and we are getting very good at learning our number bonds to 10.
We have also been learning the names and properties of 2D and 3D shapes and have been creating our own simple and complex patterns. We have built our own shapes, been on a shape hunt, used shapes to print, created directions using positional language and have enjoyed playing ‘Guess my Shape’.
The children have enjoyed exploring our outdoor area, and particularly enjoyed learning about different types of bears and building them a habitat. The children made sure their habitat was big enough for the bear to fit into, was nice and warm so the bear could hibernate and even left some food for the bear and its cubs and labelled each section of the habitat.
In reception, the children had a lot of fun learning about different types of houses and bridges and have built some of their own, using lots of different materials. We looked at houses from a long time ago and even looked at houses in different countries. We then built our own houses using playdough and straw and tested their strength against the big bag wolf.
In Spring 2, we have also been learning about life with dinosaurs, the life cycle of a frog, chick and a butterfly and have enjoyed monitoring our eggs and caterpillars in the classroom. We have done our own ‘Dinosaur Dig’ and ‘Pond Dipping’, have learned about the diet of a dinosaur, have created our own dinosaurs and dragons and have investigated lots of different mini-beasts. We’ve also enjoyed experimenting with colour mixing, using the computers and getting muddy outside.
This term, we have also been lucky enough to participate in World Book Day and Sport Relief. For World Book Day we all came dressed as our favourite book character and enjoyed a day full of fun based on the book ‘The Button’. For Sports Relief, we came dressed as our favourite sportsperson, or ready for our favourite sport and had lots of fun participating in a sports carousel with our Nursery friends.
We are finishing the term by learning about Easter and by introducing our chicks and butterflies into the world.
In the Summer term, we will be learning about different countries and their traditions and will be learning how to look after our environment. Please visit again soon for an update on our learning.
