Welcome to Reception
This half term we have started our exciting topic of ‘People Who Help Us’. We have learned all about the great work Doctors and Nurses do and how Vets look after animals. We will be continuing our topic with a focus on Police, Dentists and Firefighters too. We have been very intrigued by the different medical equipment, emergency vehicles and safety equipment used by each professional and have impressed the adults in Reception with our retention of new vocabulary. We have enjoyed taking on the role as a Doctor, Nurse, Vet or patient and have showcased our caring abilities and fantastic imaginations.
We have also enjoyed sharing some fantastic stories surrounding our topic, including; ‘Zog and the Flying Doctors’, ‘Hairy Maclary’s Rumpus at the Vets’, ‘I’m Afraid Your Teddy Is In Trouble Today’ and ‘Dinosaur Firefighters’. We have sequenced and re-told the story, named our own pets, completed a book review and will be making our own wanted posters, amongst much more.
In Maths, we have started our topic ‘Alive in 5’, which we will be building on across the term, until we are confident with applying new mathematical concepts to numbers up to 10. We have been enjoying using different concrete and pictorial resources to support our learning and have acquired a lot of new mathematical language. We’ve even started to learn the days of the week in order!
We have also been enjoying the crisp, cold weather outdoors and our waterproofs and wellies have been very useful! We have been building on our team work and communication skills and have enjoyed developing our fine and gross motor skills, with lots of climbing, ball games and building.
We have lots to look forward to for the rest of term, including a visit from our local vet, a trip to view some emergency vehicles, some explorative learning about Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day before starting our new topic on ‘What Grows’. Please visit again soon for further updates!
