Welcome to Our Spring Page. We hope you had a fantastic break and are ready for the new year ahead!
Spring Term is going to be extra busy for the pupils in Year 6. We are working hard with our Literacy and Maths skills as well as developing our knowledge and skills in our foundation subjects. In History, we are studying the Early Islamic Empire and in Geography, we will be looking in detail at the development of the Ancient City of Baghdad. For the first part of Spring Term, we will be working with both Mrs Leonard and Miss Richardson.
Magnificent Mathematicians
In Maths, we are moving on to look at decimals and percentages. We will be learning key equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages and using this knowledge in puzzles and problems. Later in the term, we will be looking at Shape, Space and Measure – ensuring that our skills and knowledge are developing at all times. We are continuing to use the White Rose challenges which develop our fluency, reasoning and problem solving skills.
Literacy – Determined Writers and Keen Readers
In Literacy, we will be reading ‘Oranges in No Man’s Land’ by Elizabeth Laird. The story is about a young girl called Ayesha who is growing up in the war torn world of Beirut. Children in Year 6 will be developing grammar and writing skills, as well as focusing on our reading development. We will be writing our own letters and stories set in different environments. If you would like to read more about Oranges in No Man’s Land you can click the link below:

We will also be reading other texts to widen our vocabulary and strengthen our love of reading. In Class 6, as well as our individual reading books, we will be looking into the inspirational and thoughtful book ‘Wonder’ by R.J Palacio. The novel is about a young boy called Auggie who combats difficult social situations and discovers the magic of friendship and trust.
Physical Education
For the first half term, we will be developing our Games skills. Playing Netball outdoors (when the weather is good!) and developing our throwing, catching and communication skills. We will be playing netball games in teams so that we can use attacking and defending skills to compete against each other. The weather is extra cold so warm fleeces/jumpers/hoodies, gloves and hats will be needed this term!
