Welcome to Class 5 Autumn Term 2019
Our topic this term is based around Captain James Cook and we have lots of exciting things planned!
Literacy
Our class book is ‘The Girl of Ink and Stars’ by Kiran Millwood Hargarve.
This is a book about a young girl, who is forbidden to leave her island. However she dreams about the far away lands that her father mapped. When her best friend goes missing, she’s determined to be part of the search party. So setting off with an ancient map and using her knowledge of the stars to help her, she navigates the island’s dangerous Forgotten Territories. But… what will she discover?!
As part of our literacy work we will be writing character descriptions, missing persons reports and diary entries. We will also look at a variety of techniques that we can use as writers to engage our audience. Keep checking back to see examples of our work.
Maths
In the Autumn term we will cover place value, addition and subtraction, statistics, multiplication and division and we will finish the term with perimeter and area. In each unit the children will be given opportunities to work practically and to apply their knowledge and understanding in a variety of contexts. We currently follow the White Rose Scheme of Learning.
Science
In science we will be investigating states of matter and materials. We will use our understanding of materials to help Captain Cook on his voyage! Then, we will move onto finding out more about forces and magnets.
History
In history our key question is ‘Who was James Cook and what is he famous for?’ As part of this, we will be using a variety of historical skills to find out about Captain Cook and what life would have been like as a member of his crew. We will also debate his legacy!
Geography
Geography will be linked to James Cook too! We will find out where the countries that he visited and discovered were located and how we can describe where they are using lines of latitude and longitude and the hemispheres. We will also find out more about the Tropics, climate zones and biomes and vegetation belts!
R.E
Our religious education focus for the first half term is on how we care for others and particularly how Muslims care for others through the ritual of Zakat.
In the second half, we will explore how and why Christians give to others at Christmas.
P.E
We will be doing P.E on a Tuesday. Please make sure that your child has their kit in school all week but particularly on a Tuesday!
This term we will be learning the Haka! We will learn all the moves (perhaps even the cries) then we will work in small groups to create our own version. This will form part of a whole school display, showcasing dances from around the world. Hopefully we won’t be too scary!
Watch the video to check out some of the moves we will be learning!
