Topic
In the first half of the term we will be investigating what life has been like in Barnard Castle throughout the ages, focusing on a historical study about Blagraves, and the railways, both in and around the local area..
During the second half of the term, year 3 will be exploring how our island varies from North to South, looking at different cultural traditions along the way.
Reading and writing
Our class books will compliment our topics, reading the ‘Secret Railway’ in the first term. In this exciting adventure story the Kingdom of Izzambard is in trouble. Big trouble. Griselda, the Master Clockmaker, has stopped time and released her mechanical birds to spread chaos and misery. They spy on anyone who might believe in the old ways of magic and laughter and the whole kingdom lives in fear. Brother and sister, Leo and Ella Leggit are clever enough and brave enough to stop Griselda and her birds – they just don’t know it yet. But when a magical train puffs into their lives, driven by the mysterious Bartholomew Buckle, all that changes …Will Leo and Ella be able to bring magic back to Izzambard once again and get home in time for fish fingers? I can’t wait to find out…
During the second half of the term when we are exploring from North to South, we will enjoy different traditional tales and local stories along the way.
Maths and number work
In maths this term, we will be extending our learning of multiplication and division, making sure that we feel confident using the 3, 4 and 8 times tables. We will then move onto the topic of money, which will be helped if children are able to discuss small purchases with you, trying to work out change and the best coins to use in the purchase will help the children to use their class based knowledge in the real world.
In the second half of the term, the children will be exploring measurement, learning about perimeter and length before beginning to look at fractions.
Science
In the first half of the term, year 3 will be exploring the fascinating subject of forces and magnets. There will be plenty of chances to investigate with rocket design, developing the best toy car and making sure that your egg astronaut makes it safely back to earth.
In the second part of the term, we will look at the topic of animals including humans which will involve us learning about skeletons and nutrition.
Art and Design Technology
We will be developing different techniques using collage, water colour painting and charcoal to create a Lowry inspired industrial landscape. This will be tied into our local history studies, so will include Blagraves within the landscape portrait for an original interpretation.
The second half of the term will provide the opportunity for the children to work with fabric to create our own unique Barnard Castle tartan.
RE
We will begin the term by exploring what do Christians believe about Jesus, particularly what values and messages that Christians believe were taught through Jesus.
The second half of the term will be focused on the Christian festival of Easter, with us asking what do Christians remember on Palm Sunday?
We will visit a local Christian church this term to further our understanding.
Sport and PE
The first part of the term will be focused on core skills and strength as we stay indoors for our gymnastics lessons. Please make sure that children have the correct Montalbo PE kit, sports trainers and a water bottle so that everyone can take part.
Hopefully the weather will begin to improve after our half term, allowing PE to move outside, where we will be perfecting our tennis skills. It would be helpful if children have something warm to go on top of their t shirt, as it may still be a little chilly!
