Welcome back! Most of our lessons this term will focus on the Bowes Museum. It is such an iconic building with an incredible story. We are so lucky to have such a beautiful building right on our door step!
English
In the first half term we will be reading our class book on the Bowes Museum which last year’s Year 2 wrote. We will be writing all about John and Josephine Bowes and their lives. We will write a biography on the founders, write letters from one to the other, newspaper reports from the opening day and much more! In the second half term we will be learning all about poetry and writing our own different types of poems. We will look at famous poems like “In Flanders Field”, onomatopoeia poems using our senses and focus on the brilliant work of Michael Rosen.
Maths
We are starting off with the basics in maths, spending a lot of time on number and place value, moving onto addition and subtraction in the second half term. We are following the Teaching for Mastery approach which will further develop our reasoning and problem solving skills.
Science
In the first half term we are looking at the work of significant scientists and inventors and the impact they have had on the world. We will be studying the works of Jane Colden, Tim Smit, Jane Goodall, Charles McIntosh, Rachel Carson and Louis Pasteur. In the second half term we will be looking at Everyday Materials.
History
We will be learning all about the history of the Bowes Museum and the John and Josephine story. We will find out who built the museum, why and why it was built in Barnard Castle. The children will also get the opportunity to visit the Bowes Museum.
Geography
We will be studying the geography of our local area this term. We will focus on using maps to find routes around Barnard Castle and mapping out the grounds of the Bowes Museum. We will also study the human and physical features of Barnard Castle.
RE
We will be looking at the significance of light in religions. In the first half term we will be studying Hinduism and looking at the festival of Diwali. In the second half term we will learn why light is important to Christians at Christmas time.
Art
In art we will be sculpting our very own Silver Swans using clay. Hopefully they will be just as good as the original!
DT
Using our knowledge of materials, we will create our own models of the Bowes Museum! Hopefully it won’t take the 28 years it took to build the real museum!
