Welcome to the Spring Term!
Literacy
In literacy, we will continue to follow the RWI programme, learning a variety of sounds and tricky words.
Alongside this, we will be further developing a variety of literacy skill such as forming sentences, using capital letters at the beginning of a sentence, for people’s names and for places.
These skills will be taught through our literacy texts which are based around our topic of ‘The Great Fire of London’.
In Spring 1, we will read The Diary of a Wombat, Toby and the Great Fire of London and Vlad and the Great Fire of London.
In Spring 2 we will read The Queen’s Knickers, The Queens Hat and Paddington’s London Treasury.
Maths
In maths, we will continue to follow the White Rose Scheme of learning and the maths mastery approach.
Our focus will begin with addition and subtraction to 20, then place value within 50 and finally measurement which includes length and height.
Science
In Spring 1, our topic is Animals including humans. During this topic we will find out about different ways that animals are classified – by the foods they eat and their characteristics. By the end of the unit, the children will be more familiar with the terms omnivore, carnivore and herbivore. They will also have identified a variety of mammals, reptiles, birds and fish.
In Spring 2, our topic is seasonal changes. We will investigate and consider changes in weather and length of days. We will be using our observation skills and our understanding of the world to help us with this.
Our overarching topic for Spring is The Great Fire of London.
History
In History, we will be discovering what life was like in 1666 with a particular focus on living conditions, jobs and buildings. We will then start to investigate the fire in a bit more detail and we’ll be using our historical enquiry skills to try and work out how we know about the Great Fire and also the impact that it had on London and the UK.
Geography
Our Geography focus is on the UK. We will be finding out about all the different countries that make up the UK and some of their physical features. We will take an in-depth look at London and its landmarks (human features).
PSHE
In Spring 1, we will be finding out all the different ways to stay healthy and look after our bodies. Then we will finding out about living in the wider world and money. So watch out!
D.T
Our D.T topic for Spring 2 is food and nutrition. In this unit, we will learn more about the taste of different fruit and vegetables and how to prepare them to make a smoothie.
P.E
We are trying to stay as active as we can in Spring. We will be following the Primary Youth Sport videos and schemes to deliver our P.E. In spring 1, we will focus on gymnastics and then we’ll be looking at health related exercise.
