Class 4 – Autumn Term 2021

Welcome to Class 4! I am really excited about the things we will be doing over this term – have a look below and see!

English

In the first half term we will be reading ‘Boy of the Deeps’ which links to our history topic on Coal Mining and ‘The Boy who Harnessed the Wind’ which links to our geography topic. We will be using our vocabulary and grammar skills to help us write our own diary entry and newspaper article. During the second half term we will be writing our own adventure and fantasy stories and letters using inspiration from ‘Journey’ and ‘Dragon Rider.’

Maths

We will be starting with number and place value, recapping some of the skills from last year. We are following the mastery approach, developing our problem solving and reasoning skills. During this term we will also cover addition an

d subtraction, length and perimeter and some multiplication and division.  We will also be doing lots of times tables practice – recapping 2, 5, 10, 3, 4, 8 times tables learnt in previous years and starting to add in 6, 7, 9, 11, 12 times tables too!

Science

In the first half term we will be exploring States of Matter. We will look at what they are, how they can change, and those change processes are called! In the second half term we will be covering Living Things and Habitats. We will be finding out all about our local habitats, food chains and environmental changes.

History

Our history topic has a local focus this term. We will be looking at the impact of coal mining on the North East. This will include developing our historical enquiry skills and learning about the key events during the Industrial Revolution. We will also learn about what life was like for coal miners!

Geography

We will be exploring the natural and energy resources found in the North East and how these may have changed over time. We will be learning how to use 4 figure grid references and creating our own maps using symbols and a key.

RE

This half term we will be learning all about the Jewish festival of Hanukkah and how it is celebrated. We will be thinking about how it is similar and different to other festivals and celebrations. Later in the term we will be exploring the question ‘Why do Christians call Jesus the light of the world?’

French

We will be developing our French Phonics skills through key vocabulary and explore French speaking countries.

Computing

In computing we will be learning what makes a healthy media choice and all about digital footprints. We will also learn how to make simple animations

Art

During art we will begin by completing a whole school drawing focus and ‘big draw’.  We will then explore wet felting techniques using inspiration from local artists.

DT

In DT we will be designing and creating our own book covers, using a paper template and thinking about different fastenings.

Music

This term, we are lucky enough to be learning the recorder as a whole class!  We will be following a process where we both listen and appraise and compose and improvise.  We will be using our inner ear to develop a clearer understanding of how the notes sound.  This means that when we learn songs to perform, we have a theoretical knowledge about which instruments are used as well as how the music sounds and makes us feel. Additionally, we will be learning traditional and modern Christmas music.  There will be a focus on playing an instrument, singing through sign as well as using our voices.

Outdoor Learning

This half term we will be learning to den build using resources we can find in our woodland area and tarpaulins. We will also be practicing rope tying techniques including square lashing and tying a bowline knot.
