Class 1 – Autumn 2024

English

In English we will be reading the book Jim and the Beanstalk. This is an alternative fairy

tale version of Jack on the Beanstalk. We will submerge ourselves into the story, retelling it verbally with actions to help us write what happened in the story. We will also write a letter to the giant and complete a book review. In the second half term we will be reading Roald Dahl’s The Enormous Crocodile. We will work on sequencing skills to help retell the story.

Read Write Inc.

Phonics is taught daily following the ‘Read, Write Inc’ programme. Children will be given reading books that follow the sounds taught in school. All children should read each book three times to develop fluency. Children will be read with weekly in school too. Bookmarks with common exception words will also be sent home and checked regularly.

Maths

In Maths we follow the Teaching for Mastery approach. Children will learn using concrete, pictorial and abstract representations. During the Autumn Term we will cover number and place value within 10, addition and subtraction within 10 and shape, recognising and naming 2D and 3D shapes.

Science

In the first half term we are looking at Everyday Materials, identifying, grouping and comparing different materials using their properties. In the second half term we will find out about seasonal change in Autumn in plants, animals and weather.

History

In history we will be looking at the Bowes Museum and identifying and discussing why it is a significant building in Barnard Castle. The children will get chance to visit the museum to help identify how it has changed from past photos.

Geography

In Geography we will be look at what our school and its surroundings are like. As part of this we will look at how our school is made up, the different rooms in our school and what they look like on a map. We will then look at aerial photographs of our school, identifying where the key places are and also how our school has changed over the years.

RE

In RE we will look at the Christian festival of Harvest, identifying what Harvest is and why Christians celebrate it. Will will also get chance to visit St. Mary’s church to take part in our own Harvest Festival. In the second half term, we will consider the different gifts that are given by Christians at Christmas and why these gifts are given.

Music

We follow the Sing Up scheme of work. Our first unit of work is ‘Menu’ followed by preparation for Christmas!

Computing

In our first unit of work the children will become more familiar with the different components of a computer by developing their keyboard and mouse skills, and also start to consider how to use technology responsibly. We will then explore the world of digital art and its exciting range of creative tools. Children will have the opportunity to create their own paintings, while getting inspiration from a range of other artists.

Art

In art we will begin with a focus on drawing skills, developing these skills to be able to take part in our whole school art project of drawing a shoe. We then get into the festive spirit by designing new Christmas outfits for a party!

DT

In DT, we will look at mechanisms, specifically wheels and axles and use this to make our own Christmas train.
