Ms Whelan has had a lovely time harvesting potatoes with Reception Class.
The children were very excited to discover there were potatoes ready to dig up in our vegetable bed in the garden. We learned that the word for picking or digging up vegetables is ‘harvesting’. We all took turns to harvest our potatoes. There were worms, woodlice, centipedes and spiders to look at as we did it! We made sure we were careful not to harm them.
Back in the classroom we guessed how many potatoes were in our harvest; there were lots of great guesses ranging from 10 to 1000! There were 67 potatoes! Flynn was closest with his guess of 44.
We talked about how autumn is harvest time. We decided to have an autumn harvest feast with our potatoes. Noah M suggested we could make mashed potato and gravy!
On Thursday, that’s what we did. We all helped to wash, chop, and mash our potatoes. Everybody worked very hard and kept trying, especially at the chopping.
Before we ate our autumn harvest feast, we sang the song ‘One Potato, Two Potato’. Then we ate our own homegrown potatoes. It felt great to go through the process from vegetable bed to plate and to do it all together!
