Spring Term
We are very lucky to have a trainee teacher this term. Miss Earl is in her final year of her teaching degree, after working at our school previously as a teaching assistant. She has been observing in class since the Autumn term and will begin teaching in class throughout Spring.
This half term we have started one of our favourite topics ‘People Who Help Us’. We are learning all about the fantastic work Doctors, Nurses, Paramedics and Vets do, thinking carefully about what humans and animals need to be healthy and well. We will be continuing our topic with a focus on Police, Dentists and Firefighters too. We have enjoyed learning about the medical equipment that is used and have been looking closely at different emergency vehicles. We are also hoping to visit the local Quad station, to find out more about how the emergency services help people and to explore the vehicles and equipment.
We have thoroughly enjoyed taking on the different roles within the emergency services, although some of the adults were reluctant to re-visit our role play Doctor’s Surgery after one visit!
We have also enjoyed sharing some fantastic stories surrounding our topic, including; ‘Zog and the Flying Doctors’, ‘Hairy Maclary’s Rumpus at the Vet’, ‘I’m Afraid Your Teddy Is In Trouble Today’ and ‘Dinosaur Firefighters’. We have sequenced and re-told the story, have written lists and are going to be creating ‘Wanted’ posters, writing apologies and much more.
We have been working so hard on our phonetic knowledge and are becoming increasingly confident with our reading and writing. We use our ‘Fred fingers’ at every given opportunity and are getting very good at it!
- In Maths, we have started our topic ‘Alive in 5’, which we will be building on across the term, until we are confident with applying new mathematical concepts to numbers up to 8. We have been using different concrete and pictorial resources to support our learning and have acquired a lot of new mathematical language. Later within this half term, we will be developing our knowledge and skills on mass and capacity, length, height and time and 3D shapes.
We enjoyed starting this half term with a lot of snow! Although it was very cold at times, we made to sure to wrap up warm and enjoyed exploring in the snow, trying to release frozen objects in the garden and painting the snow using our powder paints. We have also been developing our problem solving skills and are developing our resilience, making sure we don’t give up and always ‘give it a go’.
We have lots to look forward to for the rest of term, when we will begin our ‘What Grows’ topic. We will be learning about human growth, how places develop over time, what plants need to grow and survive and will look at different life cycles. We are hoping to get our own caterpillars too, to observe their transformation.
