Welcome to Reception
What a great start we have had to our year in Reception!
We have been so busy making new friends and reuniting with friends from Nursery and have impressed the adults with how we have learned the new rules and routines. As play is such an important part of our learning, we have been exploring lots of different activities and have thoroughly enjoyed exploring both of our classrooms. We’ve also made full use of our outdoor area, come rain or shine! We have already had a lot of practice putting on our waterproofs and wellies, as the sun has quickly disappeared!
Our team work and ability to collaborate has been great – building, sharing, drawing, writing and inventing lots of fun games – our imagination and communication skills have already improved! We’ve enjoyed exploring our home corner, looking after the babies, getting ‘ready’ at the dressing table and cooking the adults’ favourite meals.
Our problem solving skills have already started to flourish and we have been trying hard to work together to come up with solutions to our problems and use the resources around us to help. We are so proud of ourselves! We have also been working on our self-help skills and have been getting ready for PE independently, before enjoying fantastic our fantastic ‘Ready, Sett, Go!’ sessions with our coach Dean.
We have been so excited to introduce ‘The Kindness Elves’ into our classroom too. They spread kindness and joy wherever they go and have been setting us special tasks to spread their kindness further. We have also been enjoying our ‘Happy mind’ sessions in school. Happy Mind teaches the children preventative habits that support positive mental health, resilience and self esteem in an age-appropriate way and the children have loved learning about their brain and doing some happy breathing exercises!
As we have been busy completing our Reception Baseline Assessments, we have been doing a lot of Phase One phonics, focusing on the children’s speaking and listening skills. We are also starting our phonics programme – Read Write Inc. We are so excited to get started and to learn some new sounds! We will also be continuing to share our love of books in school and at home. We have really enjoyed sharing a book as a class, with our friends and on our own and we have made a great start to the year with lots of reading at home.
We will be reading ‘The Paper Dolls’, ‘Our Class is a Family’ and ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and are looking forward to sharing more books each week! After reading this half terms books, we will be discussing and sharing a lot about our own families and ourselves. We will continue this and look at our homes, school and local area. We are also hoping to have a trip into town to look at the local area and what makes it special!
We are also starting our Maths mastery scheme – White Rose Maths. We will start by looking at ‘Matching and sorting’ and will continue our learning with some counting and subitising. We are looking forward to lots of number challenge and problem solving.
