Summer
We started our summer term with the topic ‘Let’s build’. Our focused stories included ‘The Three Little Pigs,’ ‘When I Build with Blocks,’ ‘This is our House’ and ‘An engineer like me’.
The children designed their own pig and wolf masks and re-enacted the story, ‘The Three Little Pigs’. They showed excellent teamwork as they build houses from straw, bricks and sticks. They drew their own houses and used their emergent writing skills to add labels to their pictures.
In maths this term, we started off our learning looking at comparing the weight of different objects. The children used balance scales to look at which object was ‘heavier’ and which was ‘lighter’. Next, we looked at capacity, using different sized jugs and beakers. The children learnt new vocabulary such as full, empty, nearly full and nearly empty. We then focused on positional language, hiding objects and describing where they were using language such as on, under, in out, in front of and behind. Following this, we learnt about ‘fewer than’ and ‘more than’ by comparing quantities to recognises which group of objects had more and which had fewer.
Following the children’s interest in mini-beasts, we completed observational drawings of snails. The children enjoyed holding the snails, showing care and consideration when bolding them. We then released the snails back into their natural habitat.
