Welcome Back Year 3.
Let’s have a look at what we are going to be learning about this term.
English
Look at the fantastic books that we will be looking at over this term.
The Secrets of a Sun King will be read over the whole term where we will enter a world of Egyptian pharaohs and ancient curses from the Queen of Historical Fiction in London, 1922.
A discovery from ancient Egypt . . .
A cursed package . . .
The untold story of a young pharaoh . . .
When Lilian Kaye finds a parcel on her Grandad’s doorstep, she is shocked to see who sent it: a famous Egyptologist, found dead that very morning, according to every newspaper in England!
The mysterious package holds the key to a story . . . about a king whose tomb archaeologists are desperately hunting for.
Lil and her friends must embark on an incredible journey – to return the package to its resting place, to protect those they love, and to break the deadly pharaoh’s curse . . .
Maths
We will be learning about four different units over the Summer Term:
- Time (Analogue and Digital)
- Angles (Right angles, Obtuse and Acute)

- Weight and capacity
Science
In the first half of the term we will be exploring plants, looking at:
•Identifying and describing the functions of different parts of flowering plants: roots;stem/trunk;leaves;and flowers.
•Exploring the requirements of plants for life and growth (air, light, water, nutrients from soil, and room to grow) and how they vary from plant to plant.
•Investigating the way in which water is transported within plants.
•Exploring the part that flowers play in the life cycle of flowering plants, including pollination, seed formation and seed dispersal.
In the Second half of the term we will be learning about forces and magnetism, we will be learning:
Comparing how things move on different surfaces.
•Noticing that some forces need contact between two objects, but magnetic forces can act at a distance.
•Observing how magnets attract or repel each other and attract some materials and not others.
•Comparing and grouping together a variety of everyday materials on the basis of whether they are attracted to a magnet, and identify some magnetic materials.
•Describing magnets as having two poles.
•Predicting whether two magnets will attract or repel each other, depending on which poles are facing.
PE
In the first half of the term we will be joined by the cricket coach each week, we will also be learning the skills required to play junior tag rugby. Make sure to bring a sports top to go over your Montalbo PE kit because it can still be chilly in Spring.
After half term we will be focussing on athletics. Hopefully, the weather will now be brighter, so now we need to make sure that we are bringing sun protection and have our bottles filled with water.
History
In the first half of Summer Term we will be making historical enquiries, placing the Ancient Egyptian civilisation onto a timeline. We will use a variety of sources to research who built the pyramids, looking at the tools they used. As part of a special Egyptian themed day with the Hancock Museum in Newcastle, we will identify the purpose of pyramids, find out who was buried in them and finally, reflect upon the achievements of the Ancient Egyptian civilisation?
Geography
In the first part of the term we will be travelling to the River Nile (virtually) to explore these questions:
Where are the major deserts in the world and which is in Egypt?
Can I identify the position and significance of lines of latitude, longitude, Equator?
What is the climate like in Egypt?
Why is the River Nile and it’s flood plain important in Egypt?
What must it be like to live in Cairo?
What are the human and physical features of Cairo and how does it compare to London?

Our sculpture unit is inspired by the artist Alexander Calder. As part of our focus on ‘This is me’ we will be creating our own wire portraits.
Our collage unit will be focussed on making an Egyptian inspired necklace.
Outdoor learning
In outdoor learning we will be beginning with a gardening focus, exploring the effect on our mental health and sense of wellbeing as we grow radish, peas and flowers.
After half term our outdoor learning will be sports focussed, linked to the Olympics.
DT
After half term we will be embarking on a project to make a pneumatic sarcophagus. Our key skills are:
- Understanding how pneumatic systems work
- Learning that mechanisms are a system of parts that work together to create motion
- Understanding that pneumatic systems can be used as part of a mechanism
- Learning that pneumatic systems force air over a distance to create movement
