Class 3 – Spring 2023

Welcome to Class 3

PE is on a Monday and Thursday.

Outdoor learning is on a Tuesday.

Spellings are sent home every Friday.

Homework is sent home on a Friday and should be handed in on a Wednesday.

English

In the first half term we will be reading ‘How to wash a Woolly Mammoth’ followed by ‘The Wild Way Home’ and ‘Secrets of Stonehenge’ which links to our history topic on the Stone Age. We will be building on the skills we learnt during the autumn term to write instructions and non-chronological reports. In our oracy unit we will be recording our own explanations. During the second half term we will explore the poetry of Michael Rosen in ‘Jelly Boots, Smelly Boots’ and write our own biography of Mary Anning inspired by ‘Stone Girl, Bone Girl’ by Laurence Anholt.

Maths

In Maths, we will be building on our multiplication and division skills from the autumn term. Then we will move on to exploring length and perimeter. After half term we will be learning all about fractions and investigate mass and capacity. We will of course be continuing to do lots of practice of our times tables. There will also be opportunities to revisit some areas of learning from the year.

   

Science

In the first half term we will be studying ‘Rocks’ learning how to classify them and discovering how fossils are made as well as exploring another scientist! In the second half term we will use science to explore our topic of the Stone Age. We will look at enquiries in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

     

History

Our history topic this term is the Stone Age! We will discover what life was like in Britain after the last Ice Age and how tools and weapons were made and used. We will also be thinking about the changes from the Stone Age to the Iron Age and what impact they had.

   

Geography

The topic this term is the UK and we will become familiar with its counties, cities, mountain ranges and rivers. We will be looking at the importance of river crossings and the spread of population around County Durham.

   

RE

This half term we will be learning all about Islam and how Muslims pray. We will be looking at why Muslim prayer mats as well as the different movements of Salat. After that we will be exploring Palm Sunday and its importance to Christians.

French

In French we will be learning how to describe our bodies in French as well as our personalities. After half term we will work on simple sentences to talk about stationary!

Computing

In computing we will be learning the concept of sequencing in programming through Scratch. It begins with an introduction to the programming environment, which will be new to most learners. They will be introduced to a selection of motion, sound, and event blocks which they will use to create their own programs, featuring sequences.

Art

During the second half of the term, we will be creating our own watercolour river paintings taking inspiration from Monet and then exploring a simple mono printing technique.

DT

In Design Technology we will be looking at food and nutrition. This includes designing, making and evaluating a product – we will be making dips!

PE

This term we are building on our gymnastics skills of taking our own weight and looking at our health through fitness. After half term we will continue our gymnastics skills looking specifically at symmetry and our new topic will be Yoga.

Music

This half term we will be learning how to compose our own pieces of music and developing our listening skills.

PSHE

In PSHE our topic is ‘What are families like?’ We will discover how families can be different from each other and to look in depth at family bonds and relationships.

Outdoor Learning

Over the spring term we will be building on our skills of fire lighting and den building. We will also be preparing for spring in the garden by caring and developing our pollinator bed.
