Class 3 – Autumn Term 2020

Welcome back to school, have a look at what we are going to be learning this term:

English

We will begin our year by reading ‘The boy, the mole, the fox and the horse’ followed by ‘Brambly Hedge’.  We will be focussing on learning to write in the cursive style as we  build our skills to write character and description settings.

After half term we will be using ‘The firework maker’s daughter’ as we develop our vocabulary and grammar skills in the style of a diary.  We will also be reading ‘Oscar and the Moth’, which links to our science topic of light, were we will be writing our own play scripts to perform.

Maths

We will begin the year by focusing on number and place value, building a solid foundation for the rest of the year.  We will be following a mastery approach with plenty of chances for problem solving and reasoning.

We will then be moving onto a study of the four operations.  We will be building on the 2, 5 and 10 times tables learned in Year 2, by adding the Year 3 times tables of 3, 4 and 8.

Science

In Science we will begin by looking at the impact that science has on the world around us, and its impact on our future.  Each Year group is studying a different scientist, in Year 3 we are fortunate enough to have two to study!  Our scientist are Spencer Silver and Arthur Fry.  Without giving too much away, they are two scientists who came up with an invention by accident…

Here is a little clue!

After half term we will be looking at ‘light’.  We will be investigating what light is, how shadows are formed and will explore reflective surfaces.

French

In French, we will be focusing on key vocabulary with a particular focus on pronunciation as we develop our knowledge of french phonics.

Computing

During our ICT lesson we will be creating, programming and decoding basic software, linking to our history unit by making a movie.  We will also be understanding how to stay safe online.

Geography

During our geography lessons we will be learning about the journey of the River Tees.    We will follow the river past the local landmarks of the weir and High Force, learning the names of parts of a river and why rivers flood.

History

In history lessons we will be focussing on local history.  Looking at what evidence there is of woollen mills in our town and  what daily life was like for those involved.

PE

In PE we will begin the year learning dance and yoga.  Our dance will reflect the water cycle, linking to our geography topic.  During yoga we will explore mindfulness techniques, with a focus on wellbeing.

Outdoor Learning

During our weekly outdoor learning sessions in the copse, we will be developing our team work skills as well as developing our own rules about how to stay safe when outside.

RE

In the first part of the term we will be looking at how Hindus worship.

After half term we will be focussing on christianity, asking how and why is Advent important to Christians?

Art

During art we will begin by completing a whole school drawing focus and ‘big draw’.  We will then create tie dye artwork/decorations inspired by artist Hugo Pineda.

DT

In DT the children will be using cross stitch and applique to create a small cushion.
