English
In English we will be reading Grandad Mandela and learning all about Nelson Mandela’s life. We will then use this information to write a biography of his life. This will enable us to continue to practice our grammar and punctuation skills.
During the second half term we will explore Here We Are which is a wonderfully illustrated book. The key messages of acceptance, kindness and caring for the planet (and its inhabitants) are conveyed in a simple yet effective way. Then we will look at a book called The Iron Man which is about the unexpected arrival in England of a giant metal man who helps defend the world from a dragon. This will enable us to create some pieces of work with a variety of vocabulary.
Maths
In maths we will move onto measurement, looking at length, height, mass, weight, volume, capacity and temperature. We will also learn about statistics, creating tally charts, pictograms and block diagrams and look at position and direction.
Science
In science we are going to recap what we have learnt about plants so far and observe the bulbs and seeds we planted last half term. This will enable us to discuss how plants grow and what suitable conditions they need. Then we will be looking at animals, including humans. We will investigate what animals and humans need to survive and stay healthy, offspring and how we can look after our bodies. We will also look at the scientists Agnes Arber and Elizabeth Garrett Anderson.
Geography
In geography we will start by naming and locating the world’s continents and oceans. Then we will be using that knowledge to locate Barnard Castle and Cape Town on a map. We will be comparing these two places to see the similarities and differences in the weather, proximity to the equator, human features, physical features and which oceans they are near. We will then use skills we have developed in Oracy to present a weather forecast.
History
In history we will focusing on significant people. We will start by exploring significant people we know such as John and Josephine Bowes, George Stephenson and many more significant people we can think of as a class. Then we will focus on a significant explorer called Ibn Battuta. We will look at where he travelled and the impact he had on others.
RE
In the first half term, we will be looking at what it means to belong to Christianity. We will start by exploring what we belong to such as school, sports clubs and our families. We will talk about how it feels to belong to a group and compare the different groups we belong to. Then we will look at why baptisms are important to Christians and explain how people can belong to a religion.
In the second half term, we will be focusing on Hinduism. We have learnt about Hinduism in the autumn term, but we will be focusing on the festival of Raksha Bandhan and why it is celebrated.
Art
In art we will be designing and printing patterns on African animals inspired by Edward Saidi’s Tingatinga art. . We will also create collage portraits of ourselves, inspired by Pablo Picasso.
DT
In DT we are going to be making a healthy wrap but before we do, we are going to look at what makes a balanced diet. We will look at the nutritional information on packaging to compare different food and look at the five food groups. Once we have learnt all the knowledge, we will use appropriate equipment to weigh and measure food, use techniques such as cutting and then evaluate our wraps.
