Outdoor learning is on a Monday.
Spellings are sent home every Friday and tested on a Friday.
Homework is sent home on a Friday and should be handed in by Wednesday.
We encourage children to read with an adult at home every day.
English
In the first half term we will be reading ‘How to wash a Woolly Mammoth’ followed by ‘The Stolen Spear’ and ‘Secrets of Stone Henge’ which links to our history topic on the Stone Age. We will be building on the skills we learnt during the autumn term to write instructions and non-chronological reports. In our oracy unit we will be recording our own explanations. During the second half term we will explore the poetry of Michael Rosen in ‘Jelly Boots, Smelly Boots’ and write our own biography of Mary Anning inspired by ‘Stone Girl, Bone Girl’ by Laurence Anholt.
Maths
In Maths, we will be building on our multiplication and division skills from the autumn term. We will be learning how to multiply and divide 2 digit numbers by a 1 digit number. Then we will move on to exploring length and perimeter. After half term we will be learning all about fractions and investigate mass and capacity. We will of course be continuing to do lots of practice of our times tables. Please support us by practicing with your children at home regularly. There will also be opportunities to revisit some areas of learning from the year.
Science
In the first half term we will be studying ‘Rocks’ learning how to classify them and discovering how fossils are made as well as exploring another scientist! In the second half term we will use science to explore ‘Light’ through a number of exciting experiments. We will be learning that we need light to see, what ‘dark’ is, how light from the sun can be dangerous and how shadows are formed. We will also look at the scientist ‘Justus Von Liebig’ and what he has to do with mirrors!
History
Our history topic this term is the Stone Age! We will start by coming up with our own historical enquiry questions and recapping primary and secondary sources. Then we will place historical periods we know on a timeline. We will discover what life was like in Britain after the last Ice Age and how tools and weapons were made and used. We will look at the changes from the Stone Age to the Iron Age and what impact they had.
Geography
The topic this term is the UK and we will become familiar with its counties, cities, mountain ranges and rivers. We will be looking at the importance of river crossings and the spread of population around County Durham. We will be developing our map and fieldwork skills outside the classroom too!
RE
This half term we will be learning all about Islam and how Muslims pray. We will look at where, when and why Muslims pray. We will explore prayer mats, the process of Wudhu as well as the different movements of Salat. After that we will be exploring Palm Sunday and its importance to Christians. This will include recapping the story of Easter before looking at the run up to Easter in more detail.
French
In French we will be learning how to describe our bodies in French as well as our personalities. Later on in the term we will learn the French names for items in our pencil cases and practice our sentence writing. We will develop our speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.
Art
During the second half of the term, we will be creating our own watercolour river paintings taking inspiration from Monet and then exploring a simple mono printing technique. In our painting we will mix colours exploring shades and tones, use a wash, use complimentary colours, explore light and dark and use a range of brushes and techniques.
DT
In Design Technology we will be looking at food and nutrition. This includes designing, making and evaluating a product. We will research, design, make and evaluate our own dips. We will find out about a range of ingredients and how to select and use different utensils.
PE
We are doing Football in our PE this half term followed by Yoga later in the second half term. In Football, we will learn how to stop the ball, dribble, turn, shield and make good decisions when in possession. In Yoga, we will perform a variety of poses, control our breathing and devise our own meditations.
PSHE
In PSHE our topic is ‘What are families like?’ We will discover how families can be different from each other and to look in depth at family bonds and relationships. We will also explore ‘Community’ and what it means to be part of one.
Outdoor Learning
Over the spring term we will be preparing the ground for the growing season, making our school grounds more bird friendly and growing a crop from seed. Later on we will be building on our Den Building skills as well as recapping square lashings and bowline knots.
