English
In English this term we are reading Mrs Armitage on Wheels and The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch.
Mrs Armitage is an inventor who is always thinking of ways to make her bike better. She adds lots of different things onto her bike such as a bucket to wash her hands, an umbrella to keep the rain off and even a sail to make her go faster. However, the sail and anchor are one two many things and it all ends in disaster. Mrs Armitage takes her bike to the rubbish dump and decides she needs some roller skates instead. The children will use adjectives and nouns to design Mrs Armitage some fancy new roller skates with lots of added extras.
The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch is a story of Mr Grinling who is an industrious lighthouse keeper. Every day Mrs Grinling sends his lunch in a basket on a wire from their cottage on the cliff to the lighthouse. However, one Monday, three scavenging seagulls discover the appetising lunch and keep coming back every day to steal it. Mrs Grinling tries different ways to deter the seagulls until she discovers that they don’t like mustard sandwiches. She keeps making the mustard sandwiches until the seagulls fly off and eat someone else’s lunch instead. The children will use this book as inspiration to write instructions about how to make mustard sandwiches. They may even try some themselves!
Maths
This term we will be focusing on fractions, position and direction, money and time. Children will identify and find halves and quarters of shapes and quantities; move forwards, backwards, left and right and complete quarter, half, three quarter and full turns; identify and count different coins and notes; tell the time to o’clock and half past and learn the days of the week and months of the year. We will also look at numbers and place value to 100, identify the tens and ones that make up a number and one more and less than any number within 100.
Science
In science we will look at the structure of flowering plants and identify wild and garden plants. We will see what different plants and flowers we have in our school grounds. Our scientist for this topic is Wangari Maathai who was the first African Woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work with the UN Billion Tree Campaign which has resulted in more than 7 billion trees being planted across the planet. We will then revisit our seasonal change topic, looking at what happens to plants and the weather in summer and identify how summer affects the clothes we wear.
History
In history we are looking at how farming has changed across time. Children will learn about what tractors used to look like in the past and how they have changed, as well as how different milking cows used to be! We are extremely lucky to be able to have two tractors visit school so children can get a close up look at the differences.
Geography
We will also be studying farms in geography, specifically looking at the geographical features we might find on a farm. We will find out about the three different types of farms and what they are used for, physical and human features that might be on a farm and how fields are used for different purposes. We will then get to visit a farm to see if we can spot these features in real life. At the end of the topic we will build our own 3D farm and use our oracy skills to create a voice over!
RE
In RE we will look at why Jesus is special to Christians. We will discuss what a special person is and how Jesus is special by looking at stories from the Bible. We will then look at why Buddha is special to Buddhists. We will look into the life of Siddhartha Gautama and identify how he became Buddha and why is is special to Buddhist. We will then compare the similarities and differences between Jesus and Buddha.
Art
In art we will look at the work of Paul Klee, identifying how he uses shapes and collaging to create his art work. We will use his work as inspiration to make art work of vehicles in a collage style, using shapes to make the key parts of the vehicle.
DT
In DT we will use fabric to create hand puppets linked to The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch. Children will choose an animal from the story and design, make, decorate and evaluate a hand puppet.
PSHE
In PSHE we are looking at the topics of “Who helps us?” and “How can we look after each other and the world?” We will look at who keeps us safe and who we can call in an emergency. We will then investigate how we can look after people, animals and the environment.
Computing
In computing we will complete a digital writing topic. We will explore the keyboard, add and remove text, explore the toolbar and make changes to texts. We will then use Scratch Jnr. to program animations. We will use commands to create algorithms and design and create a project.
