Class 5 – Autumn 2018

Welcome to Class 5 Autumn Term

We have had a great start to the Autumn Term!

We have started the term with lots of work on the BFG.  We visited the Bowes Museum to look at the original drawings by Quentin Blake. Did you know that he did the drawings but somebody else did the water colours? Neither did we! It was great to see the statue of the BFG in the grounds of the museum as well as an original painting that Quentin Blake has donated to the Bowes Museum as part of the exhibition (which has now finished but you can still see the picture!)

In the same week it was Roald Dahl Day, we had lots of fun making frobscottle and BFG ears and playing a gobblefunk game. We have continued to read the book and have been doing lots of work in Literacy on instructions, character descriptions and using a great technique for our writing called ‘Show’ not ‘Tell’. The children have written some amazing sentences and have produced some fab pieces of work.

This term, we are blocking our subjects in the afternoon. In art we have focussed on water colours and have learnt a variety of different techniques and effects. In D.T, we have made dream catchers – they seem to be working!

We have been doing lots of work in Geography; identifying the equator, the different hemispheres, lines of latitude and longitude and the tropics. From this, we have been able to use coordinates to identify Continents and places around the world. We have also managed to squeeze in a bit of research into biomes!

Our science  topic is materials and their properties, which we will be be doing at the end of term.

Autumn 2

Next half term, will be just as action packed! Our topic is World War 1! I can’t wait to get started with it already! This year marks, 100 years since the end of the war so it is an especially poignant time. We are going to be completing a whole school poppy project and in Class 5 we will be linking our Art and D.T to topic work (from making anzac biscuits to sculpture)

We will be reading ‘War Horse’ by Michael Morpurgo and looking at a variety of primary and secondary sources alongside this. In literacy, we will be looking at diary entries, settings and speech. We will continue to follow the White Rose Scheme in maths – this is really helping us to improve our problem solving and reasoning skills. ‘Living things and their habitats’ is our science topic so get researching now in preparation!

Hope you have enjoyed finding out about Class 5, the work we have been doing and all the exciting things to come!
